Zn rich films (~85% Zn, ~15% Sn) were found to give higher device efficiency, η = 8.76 ± 0.43%, than Sn rich (~31% Zn, ~69% Sn) films, η = 6.76 ± 0.51%. The best performing Cu1.18S-GOR CE could notably achieve a record PCE of ∼3.55% for CdS sensitized QDSSCs, ∼5.42% for in situ deposited CdS/CdSe co-sensitized QDSSCs and ∼6.81% for CdTe/CdS/CdS dual sensitized QDSSCs, apart from increasing the PCE of previously reported QDSSCs. This may indicate that sodium from the soda-lime glass may leach into the films producing a shallow donor and enhancing the donor-acceptor pair luminescence. ndeza, U. Palb, C. Magan˜ac, D.R. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements are one of the key metrics available to determine the minority-carrier lifetime in the absorber layer of direct band gap photovoltaic devices. A ZnO film consisting of single crystal nanocolumns was electrodeposited on a transparent conducting substrate which acts as n-type material. By subsequent deposition of metals a chemical reaction is induced forming metal-tellurides, a metal/Sb-alloy and elemental Sb. The limitations of each deep-level characterization technique dictated by the polycrystalline nature of the CdTe/CdS heterostructure, were taken in consideration. Thus similar strategies are applied to minimize this problem. Remarkably high V OC and fill factor of 768 mV and 68.6%, respectively, were achieved using a combination of MoO3, Te, and Cu as back contact buffer layer resulting in 11.3% conversion efficiency. The binding energies as deduced from REL experiments are 107.5 meV for Ag and 146 meV for Cu. A sufficiently thick and large grained TCO layer of ZnO:Al can effectively suppress sodium diffusion in low temperature grown CdTe solar cells on soda-lime glass preventing the deterioration of solar cell properties due to sodium. The intensity and the spectrum of the PL suggest that films grown from the homemade UT target were of comparable quality to those grown from the commercial target. Chlorine segregates at GBs and at the CdS/CdTe interface and bonding to cadmium and tellurium is indicated. Our general understanding of the chemical trends of defect formation energies and transition energy levels in CdTe is expected to be applicable also to other II-VI semiconductors. Particular emphasis was placed on the potential for electrically active impurities to originate from the cadmium chloride, This final report describes results achieved under a 20-month NREL subcontract to develop and understand thin-film solar cell technology associated to CuInSeâ and related alloys, a-Si and its alloys, and CdTe. Cadmium sulphide thin films have been grown using a modified chemical bath deposition method with four innovative features: i) ethylenediamine was used as the complexing agent, enabling the use of low cadmium concentrations, ii) a rectangular bath geometry with heated glass plate walls was employed, iii) a low deposition temperature (30 °C) was used and iv) nitrogen gas was flowed over the substrate surface during growth. We ascribe this to annihilation of VCd as a result of Cdi diffusion. At high quencher concentrations, formation of QD‐NMA complexes dominates over collisional quenching. We have analyzed the PET kinetics mainly by using Stern‐Volmer fittings. Also, high absorption coefficient is calculated from the results, which is ∼5 x 105 cm-1 in solar radiation spectrum. Recent years have witnessed a revival of research and development efforts on these two materials. A recrystallization behavior of the CdTe layer upon its activation similar to superstrate configuration was found; however, no CdTe–CdS intermixing could be observed when the layers were treated consecutively. The maximum achievable Voc, Jsc, FF and η of solar cells are calculated for AM1.5G and AM0 spectra and are compared with theoretical and experimental results in the literature. We observed substantial differences, Based on the optical constants, calculations of optical losses in CdS/CdTe solar cells have been carried out taking into account reflections at the interfaces and absorption in the TCO and CdS layers. Buffer layers are a key component of high efficiency CdTe thin film solar cells. The latter two features eliminate the formation and adherence of gas bubbles on the substrate during growth, hence reducing pinhole formation. One of the hurdles in the development of CdTe devices on metallic substrates is that most of the metal foils do not form an ohmic contact with, We investigated the effects of the etching processes using bromine and nitric-phosphoric acid solutions, as well as of Cu, in the bulk electrical conductivity of CdTe/CdS solar cells using conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM).
